In this photo by Bullit Marquez, members of the Philippine elite police force carry the remains of 42 colleagues who were slain by Muslim insurgents during an anti-terrorist operation in the country's south. The casualties were not only the biggest single-day losses in recent history for Philippine government forces, they also threatened to torpedo a peace deal the government has signed with the rebels last year. President Benigno Aquino III this week warned that the collapse of the peace agreement would abet terrorism and fresh violence, but also expected the rebel group to identify the guerrillas behind the Jan. 25 killings. A total of 44 police commandos died. Aquino cited possible lapses in the dangerous police operation to capture Southeast Asia's most wanted terrorists.
